Firstly i duplicated the duck and flipped it. I made one smaller and the other one bigger, then i select both then went to object select pattern and make, that saved the pattern into the swatches panel.
On this screenshot i putted together 2 ducks where i made one smaller and the other one bigger. I changed the colour and started using shapes to place my pattern in. As you can see i have mixed the colour green and yellow into 1 shape and the other shapes i done orange and yellow, i didn't go over the top with the colours as i kept it simple.

This is colour panel what allows you to change the colours and mix colours for my ducks.

As you can see this is the normal duck that i haven't outlined. This is the template of the duck and this is where i have started fromThis duck has the beak outlined with the pen tool  and i used the direct selection tool to manipulate the anchor points. I had to reduce the number of anchor point because there were alot of curves including the beak which i found hard. Also the eyes was difficult to do as it was a small area to work on. The pupil of the eye was hard because it took time to get the shape in, after everything i filled in the main parts with colour.

On the 3rd duck screenshot i outlined everything including the eyes and i filled the eye in black and the beak mouth in dark orange. The tools i have used is the pen tool and the direct selection tool

On the layer screenshot i had to show step by step what i created so i created 5-7 layers,Which was useful because i can go back to any layer and edit anything i want by turning the eye off.

As you can see on the second screenshot i used the 3d extrude and bevel option to create my word puppet. What that option allows you to do is you can use a range of design to change the style of the word puppet and as you can see on the yellow word i used the rubber tool and that makes it look like its plastic. The cube on the last screenshot allows you to move the word around to any angle and the perspective allows you to do it swell. To use the bevel tool you need to go on effect then 3d then extrude and bevel option and that allows you to play around with the word that you have chosen. It will be ideal to use a bright colour as it will stand out more and it will look more clearer and it will be presented nicely.
